What is a Salesforce MVP?

It’s the final day to nominate someone to be a Salesforce MVP. If you know someone that is helping the community either online or offline via user groups etc nominate them today!

Also I posted a blog a couple of years ago on how I became a Salesforce MVP. Also be sure to check out the Salesforce MVP Blogs List!

Time for a tech implant?

A couple of weeks ago I was at CeBIT one of “the largest computer expo’s in the world”. At its height during the dot-com boom around 800,000 people would descend to Hanover in Germany to see the latest tech. Since then things have changed and people generally get their dose of tech via the internet rather than going to big tech events so now CeBIT has reduced to around 300,000 people.

Anyone for an Alexa implant?

Salesforce was there in full force running their German Salesforce World Tour, BUT in one of the adjoining rooms, there was a stand where you could get a RFID chip injected … yes injected! into your hand, so you could unlock your phone with a wave of your hand, or even unlock your front door? (check out the video above!)

Yes, this isn’t new but what was interesting to me was that there was a steady stream of people wanting this done to them. It’s interesting to see how attitudes to tech have changed over the years and how something in the 80s was a thing of horror is now becoming more acceptable…

The Future of Salesforce Lightning

So Monday night was a big night! We had none other than Mike Rosenbaum (@mike945778) who is in charge of the Salesforce platform including Sales, Service and Lightning. We asked him a load of questions that the community had come up with and here are some of his answers. I’ll be putting the full video up shortly:

  • Performance; We had a lot of questions around Lightning performance, Mike said that for the forthcoming release all Lightning developers at Salesforce have been working on performance and you will see big improvements!
  • Components Roadmap; Mike has committed to releasing the component roadmap so developers are not developing components that Salesforce is as well! (makes sense!)
  • Next release feature (Safe Harbor): Declarative component visibility; I’ve been waiting for this! and Mike announced it’s coming out in the next release! This puts page layouts in the dark! Think of being able to declaratively change which components appear on the layout based on the data on the record you are viewing! This is one of my “Lightning Game changer” features that I spoke about at the Sydney user group.
  • New Report builder; The next release will see a new Lightning Report Builder! which is much much better and more usable. But also with a focus on general users being able to create reports rather than being siloed in a particular team etc.
  • More Wizards / Setup Flows; At the moment there are around 20 of these wizards but Mike is expecting there to be a load more to make it easier to setup things like single sign on, cloud console etc
  • Classic is not going way; There is no secret date when the classic UI is going to be switched off. Although he did say that he maybe switching it on for all Salesforce employees in their own Salesforce org 🙂

Mike would love your feedback! Just tweet him at @mike945778 (he even said why his twitter has the crazy number)

It was Salesforce Developer evangelist John Stevenson’s birthday as well but he didn’t say a word until the very end of the evening!! Now that’s dedication to the job.

Grab some popcorn, London’s Calling 2017 videos are now LIVE!

I’m totally overjoyed to announce that we’ve uploaded the majority of the sessions for London’s Calling 2017, the largest Salesforce Community event in Europe. I can now watch all those sessions I missed :), like what was Todd wearing and why? a question I’ve been itching to find out 🙂 and Belinda Parmar OBE’s keynote on Empathy totally worth a second watch!

There are four playlists on the LC YouTube Channel:

We increased the quality of the videos this year and they look really great, there are a couple of videos still yet to be processed but the majority are now up. If you do have any questions please let me know! I know what I’m doing this weekend 🙂 … where’s the popcorn!

The Mystery of Salesforce Connect Custom Apex Extensions and the Missing video

So I wonder if anyone can answer a question that has been bugging me for months…

So Salesforce records breakout sessions at Dreamforce, and for the last couple of years, I’ve been doing a lot of theatre sessions, which don’t get recorded. So I was a little bit excited to know that one of my Dreamforce 2016 sessions had been selected to be a workshop session! Whoopie! A video’ed session and it’s going online! In the end, Salesforce started recording theatre sessions at Dreamforce 2016 as well so the majority of my sessions were recorded which was brilliant.

BUT

For some reason, Salesforce never uploaded my “Integration with Salesforce Connect and Custom Connectors” session. It never made it to the 2016 Dreamforce Developer Sessions site.

So I contacted Salesforce thinking it may have been a mistake, a couple of people did a hunt for me but couldn’t find anything conclusive.

Present > Get Feedback > Improve > Repeat

The main reason I want to know is you can only improve your public speaking with feedback. I want to know what didn’t work. I want to know why people did or didn’t engage with it. So I need your help. Could you take a look at the video and see if you can figure out why Salesforce didn’t put this video up? A couple of ideas:

  1. “The talk that was too radical for Salesforce” – I did say things which may not be the real purpose of Salesforce Connect, but in my opinion, it makes Connect a much more powerful tool than people think.
  2. “Salesforce doesn’t like product placement” – I did mention two non-Salesforce products, both of which I had contacted and one of which was a Salesforce partner anyway.
  3. “I was talking rubbish” – Maybe there are things I said that were incorrect? if so I would love to know.
  4. “They just made a mistake and forgot the video” This is probably the most likely explanation but without knowing its a bit hard to tell.
  5. “Maybe it wasn’t very good, and they don’t put bad quality sessions up” – Now with 100% of people on the session survey recommending the session for next year and 4.86 out of 5 score, one of the highest for all developer talks, I don’t think it’s that.

Take a look for yourself and see if any of these are right, I’d love to know!

Event Financing and Sponsorship, learning the hard way

We had no money, no experience running tech events, no speakers and 4 months to get the event up and running. But before reality set in we were sitting on a pier in San Francisco just before Dreamforce 2015 thinking it would be oh so easy!… or maybe it was the champagne that was talking?

I was invited to do a talk on Financing and sponsorship. I had only just got off the plane from New Zealand so I am a little jetlagged but hopefully, it’s useful for other people running tech events. Thanks to the rest of the winning LC2016 team: Jodi, Simon and Kerry

When Two wizards and Yoda met at Dreamforce …

This year’s Dreamforce was a blast! I have to say I was just a little bit busy! Two Sessions, staffing the code consultations and mini-hacks, helping out on the Salesforce security booth and deejaying the AppExchange DemoJam. But one of the most fun parts of Dreamforce was being on the WizardCast podcast hosted by the brilliant Brian Kwong (The Salesforce Wizard) and Mark Ross (Salesforce Yoda). They have just released it so go checkout all the things I really shouldn’t have said live on air, oh and Brian we missed I’m a qualified Snowboard instructor too! 🙂

If you have not got WizardCast on your podcast list add it on 🙂 Read more

Learn Salesforce Report Types in 10 minutes!

This month’s Admin user group was hosted by Slalom a US consultancy that has just created an office in London. Thanks Slalom for a great venue overlooking the Thames!

London Salesforce Admin User Group at Slalom

London Salesforce Admin User Group at Slalom

First we had Andy talking about Slalom. Slalom is a US based consultancy that has only recently moved over to the EU with their first office in London. First up was Matt with his Chatter talk. Have to say it was really interesting! How do you get analytics on who has viewed chatter groups or feeds and surface chatter analytics as a global VisualForce action, kinda neat.

Then we had Matt with his Chatter talk “I didn’t know chatter could do that”.

Have to say it was really interesting! How do you get analytics on who has viewed chatter groups or feeds? Then with the analytics you have gained how do you visualise that to all your users? via a global VisualForce action of course 🙂 kinda neat. I’ve actually been working on a chatter project myself recently had have come up with similar limitations.

London’s Calling what you missed & how it came together

Missed London’s Calling? Checkout the video above! But this is how it all started…

It all really kicked off just before Dreamforce 2015 with Jodi Wagner, Simon Goodyear, Louise Lockie, Kerry Townsend & several bottles of Champagne. We were sitting around the table and the conversation turned to something I think we had all been mulling over for some time. The creation of an event for the Salesforce community, BY the Salesforce community. An event where we could learn from community experts in Salesforce who had been at the coal face. An event that wasn’t a Sales event, but an event for Salesforce Admins & Developers designed to help us learn from each other and find out about new Apps in the Salesforce ecosystem whilst have fun doing it! 🙂 Needless to say, Will Coleman turned up and more Champagne was drunk and then…

London's Calling Napkin

London’s Calling Napkin

London’s Calling was born… Our first rough sketch of the event (on the back of a napkin) consisted of a two-day event, this quickly reduced down to one day. Let’s “start small” and see what happens, hey no one may turn up!

Tools & Tips for a Salesforce Org Review/Audit “Francis’ Five Minute Feature”

My “Salesforce five minute feature” comes to the interweb!

I’ve been doing these at the London user groups for some time but after a great suggestion from someone I’m going to slowly be putting them online.

The general idea is me presenting a feature or bit of functionality that maybe not be well used in Salesforce. Then within 5 minutes demo it.

So here is the one I did this month. Salesforce Org Reviews! Enjoy! Read more
